Operation Overlord

"Operation Overlord" began on the night of June 5, 1944 with an airborne assault on Hitler's "Fortress Europe". The Allied Airborne elements parachuted or glided behind enemy lines to destroy enemy troops as well as hold off reinforcements sent to the beaches and capture key objectives.

The morning of June 6th, 1944 kicked off the infantry assault on the German held beaches in Normandy, France. Operation Overlords two prong assault was designed to encircle and overwhelm the defenders quickly so a firm beachhead could be established. The embattled airborne troops were badly misdropped and had to form into ad-hoc fighting units to achieve their objectives. When the Airborne and Infantry units where finally united, they were able to bring the full force of the allied armies to bear against the German defenses.

Experience the history of the Fort, 14 restored historic structures constructed from 1778 to 1875, including Enlisted Barracks, Officer's Quarters, Blacksmith Shop and underground casemates. Fort Mifflin is situated on the beautiful banks of the Delaware River.
